Nose Surgery - Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the surgery which changes or refines the nose. The philosophy today in rhinoplasty is to create a nose which compliments the patient's face. The size of the nose should balance the size of the face, cheekbones, and chin. There are two approaches to rhinoplasty. The closed approach involves an incision inside the nostril. There are no external scars unless the nostrils are made smaller. The nasal bones are rasped, cartilage shaved, and the nasal tip thinned. Frequently tip grafts and spreader grafts are used.

The open approach involves an incision between the two nostrils. This approach is reserved for patients with specific difficulties or problems.

Breathing difficulties may also be corrected at the same time as rhinoplasty. The septum can be straightened (septoplasty) andthe humidifiers in the nose (tulbinates) trimmed.
